Taking It One Minor Chord at a Time

I've been taking it one minor chord at a time since my 4th right hand surgery four weeks ago.

My first two surgeries were successful at healing seven fractures after a bad fall crushed my right hand over two years ago. The last two surgeries helped increase my range of motion, with the most recent focusing on my extension. While my outer reach has gradually gotten me back to a 10th (an envious reach for most pianists), my inner reach has been more challenging. I haven't been able to play a basic 4-note minor chord in most keys for over two years.

UNTIL NOW!

Today is exactly four weeks since my last surgery, and after I do my hand stretches and warm up at the piano, I can reach minor chords in all keys except two. Go right hand!

It's been a ton of work, and I constantly question if I'm doing enough or doing the right thing for my hand. It's the longest marathon I've ever ran. But, there's no doubt in my mind that it's all worth it.

I posted the video below on Facebook 10 days after my last surgery. It was an impromptu video (pun intended) I made when I discovered I could reach a section of a Schubert Impromptu I had been faking prior to surgery. Just holding the upper B with my pinky while playing a minor chord gave me so much encouragement.

It reminded me to keep celebrating the baby steps and to just take it one minor chord at a time without adding the pressure of a time frame to my accomplishments. As long as I'm able to play piano and share my music, my heart will keep soaring.

Play On!
